a poem by Gary Beck

Grudge

The world is a spectacle of having,
yet to those who have not,
             deprived of participation
             in the arbitrary allotment
of the fruits of the earth,
             there is no consolation
             in oft repeated promises
             that never come true.
             Unlike rebellions in the past
over issues of faith or freedom,
             the current storms of violence,
             fueled by greed, drugs, hatreds,
             are further aggravated
             by the daily display
             of desirable goods,
             only obtainable
             by illicit acts.
